We’ve got our first four hours upon us this Saturday.
What shall we do?
Discuss.

I should like for us to do some reading of the play and start working our way toward some points of common agreement about what’s going on. We can also make a tentative distribution of parts and let any contention and bargaining for roles go forward (if there be any).
We should also talk a bit about the form and style of our production and about the demands of playing outside and un-miked.
Playful imaginations and inquiring minds only. No school marms.
As we are reading and working through, I propose we say all flow breaks are fair and welcome. At any time. For me it might feel as if we are reading, playing, and thinking out loud all at the same time. We want everyone feeling free to ask about anything and to offer opinions. Yes, yes, I know sometimes there has to be a “decider,” but at this point it should be more open and relaxed.
And in fact, our talk of form and style might weave through our reading.
I’d also like to try the John Russell Brown thing with the first scene, if others are willing, i.e., memorize it ahead of time and then just do it with minimal discussion. Cast list here.
(I’ll bring the post-it sheets and the markers. And a storage tub.)
I’ll bring the blow-up doll.
Oops. Wrong forum. Sorry.
We memorize the first scene in its entirety and then draw lots for parts. Otherwise I’ll waste my time obsessing about which part I want to learn. That way we could play through a number of times drawing new roles each time.
Either that or some merciful soul tell me which lines to memorize.
I do not want to learn the entire scene, so why don’t you pick either Coriolanus or one of the Tribunes and go with that? I myself am going to stick with First Citizen.
Although your point of replaying the scene with different cast has a tremendous appeal.
I’m going for the duenna role.
I’m just a pawn in this play thing! I’ll do what is requested knowing that I shall bring my ‘great paraphrasing’ ability to full force! Ya know, I might just have to read this play thing further than just the first page … dang.
Speaking of which, I invited Lamar but haven’t heard from him.
Now how did we make the jump from paraphrasing to Lamar? He better be at home learning all of Felix’s lines for “The Odd Couple” first! I tried to get my work weekend switched around but everyone had plans so I will be unable to attend. I’ll be thinking of you though!
I am still wooing my son, but it’s a delicate business. I’ve sort of gotten him to commit at least to coming to this first meeting and to reading through the play beforehand. Learning a part for I,i may not happen.
So who actually IS coming to the first meeting? That may tell us if the JRB approach is a possibility right off the bat.
Dale, Marc, Jeff B, Jobie, Dan, Greg, and Galen. Seven out of nine. Jeff Allen and Matthew Bailey have prior commitments; Craig has had to withdraw but will consult on drumming with us.
And there are two or three more who have not said no, but haven’t said yes.
Count me among the unsure.
Be unsure and come to a rehearsal anyway when you can. That’s what Galen’s doing this Saturday. Then he’ll decide.
I’m excited about the opportunity for some big, outdoor, vigorous playing. Folks round here have no idea.
